Man City close In on Elliot Anderson as deal nears final stage

City’s confidence meets the final hurdle

Manchester City’s pursuit of Elliot Anderson appears to be nearing a decisive stage, with the club confident it can complete a deal for the Nottingham Forest midfielder. Confidence, though, isn’t confirmation: another round of talks is still planned, and the outcome will depend on whether the clubs can bridge the remaining gap.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Anderson could undergo a medical in the United States while he’s with England at the World Cup. That would be an unusual setting for a transfer process, but the reported plan suggests the parties are trying to keep the deal moving around the player’s international commitments. City’s confidence follows work behind the scenes, Romano said, though the next discussions remain the practical test.

Price and midfield needs shape the move

The reported asking price is the central obstacle. Forest turned down a package of about £106m plus £15m in add-ons, while owner Evangelos Marinakis is said to want as much as £130m. Those figures describe a negotiation still in motion, and the difference between an offer structure and a stated valuation can matter as much as the headline total. A deal at that level would rank among the costliest in British football.

City have a clear midfield opening to fill: Bernardo Silva has left for Real Madrid, and incoming manager Enzo Maresca wants more energy in an ageing unit. Anderson’s ability to carry the ball forward from deep is seen as a strong fit, offering a way to connect defensive phases with attacks rather than relying only on possession circulation. If you're working in this space, that profile is attractive because it can address more than one tactical need. He’s expected to be Maresca’s first signing, which would make the transfer an early signal of how the new manager intends to reshape the side.

But a large fee raises the bar for the player and the club. City would be paying for a specific role and the expectation that Anderson can adapt quickly, while Forest would be weighing the value of keeping a key midfielder against the scale of the offer. The numbers here are underwhelming as a measure of certainty: a reported package and a reported valuation still leave the basic question unresolved.

England form adds to Anderson’s appeal

The 23-year-old strengthened his case with a strong display in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia in North America. A performance at international level can sharpen a player’s profile, particularly when clubs are assessing how his qualities might translate to a different team and a higher level of pressure. It doesn’t, by itself, settle questions about fit or price. Anderson is also understood to favour a move to City, a preference that could help talks but can’t replace agreement between the clubs.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has reportedly approved a medical during the tournament. That would allow the process to continue while Anderson remains with the national team, though the reported approval doesn’t mean the transfer is complete. If talks conclude as planned, City could complete the signing before pre-season starts in July. A medical would be a procedural step on that route, not the final word on the deal.

What the transfer would signal

For City, Anderson’s arrival would address an immediate squad question and give Maresca an early opportunity to shape the midfield. The reported interest suggests the club sees ball carrying and energy as priorities after Silva’s departure. Whether Anderson can provide those qualities consistently is a separate question, and one a transfer fee alone can’t answer.

For Forest, the negotiations show how a player’s importance to the team can collide with the financial logic of a major offer. Holding out for a high valuation may reflect the cost of replacing a central midfielder, while accepting a sale would create room to rebuild. (And this is the part most people overlook.) The timing matters too: talks during a major tournament can keep the process alive, but they also leave little room for the clubs to settle every detail in public.

Here's the thing: the story is at its most consequential when the next talks begin. City sound confident, Anderson is reportedly open to the move, and a medical plan has been discussed. Still, the fee remains the hinge. Until Forest and City agree, this is a promising negotiation, not a finished signing. A deal nearing its final stage. Still a deal to negotiate.
