Manchester United’s 3-2 comeback against Roma offered Fantasy Premier League managers a useful attacking signal, but the bigger story ahead of Gameweek 10 is how Michael Carrick used Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Cunha finished the night with two goals after moving into a central role at half-time; Mbeumo shifted left and still came close to scoring. That tactical adjustment could matter when United host Aston Villa, whose own 3-0 defeat in Barcelona exposed defensive risks.

The matches on Tuesday, November 4, also brought an injury concern for Carlos Baleba and another early withdrawal for Villa midfielder Johan Manzambi. Those minutes and role questions deserve more attention than the scorelines alone.

United found a route back through Cunha

Roma raced into a 2-0 lead inside 17 minutes and threatened to make the contest worse for United. The hosts had little attacking momentum before the break, but the second half brought a sharp reversal. Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot after being allowed a retake, then Cunha supplied the decisive moments: he won the penalty and struck twice to complete the comeback.

Cunha’s first goal came from Fernandes’ delivery after a Leonardo Balerdi error. For the winner, he ran onto a pass from Shea Lacey and finished. The Brazilian had already created another dangerous moment by sending Mbeumo through on goal; Mbeumo’s shot hit both posts and stayed out.

Cunha Mbeumo

Carrick’s half-time switch put Cunha through the middle and moved Mbeumo from centre-forward to the left. Carrick said the change was intended to give United a different shape and get Cunha into central areas, where he found useful positions. For FPL managers, the brace makes Cunha’s appeal easy to see; the open question is whether this arrangement continues beyond the Roma match.

Mbeumo’s altered position shouldn’t be read as an immediate downgrade. He had a clear one-on-one chance from the left and nearly converted it, with the ball striking both posts. He also came close to meeting a cross into the box. His night was quieter than Cunha’s, but his involvement remained meaningful.

Fernandes and Lacey add useful context

Fernandes ended a two-month spell without an attacking return, though his penalty sequence was unusual. He missed his first attempt, then Roma’s encroachment gave him another chance. Carrick praised his composure under pressure, while Fernandes said he had to clear his head before taking the retake. His second-half display looked closer to the creative and decisive performance United need from their captain.

Cunha Mbeumo

Lacey also made an impression after replacing Amad Diallo. The young winger produced the pass for Cunha’s winner and showed enough defensive commitment to cover at right-back when needed. Carrick praised his ability and attitude, while cautioning against making too much of one appearance. His cameo may put him on the radar, though it doesn’t yet establish a Premier League starting role.

United made two changes to their starting XI from Gameweek 9. Cunha, Mbeumo and goalkeeper Senne Lammens played the full 90 minutes; Fernandes and Harry Maguire came off after 88, while Amad played 75. The late concern around Maguire’s movement was not followed by an injury update.

Baleba’s injury clouds United’s midfield picture

The comeback came with a cost: Baleba left the match after 51 minutes with what Carrick thought looked like a hamstring problem. The manager said he had no further details and that the initial signs did not look good, with an assessment still to come. That leaves his availability uncertain ahead of Villa’s visit.

United’s defence also gave Villa reasons for optimism. Roma could have added to their two early goals, with further chances falling to Donyell Malen and Matías Soulé. Diogo Dalot again looked uncomfortable at left-back, while Maguire and Ayden Heaven had unsettled spells at centre-half. Lisandro Martínez, who was on the bench, is suspended for the Villa fixture.

Cunha was sent off late in the match for two bookable offences, but the resulting suspension applies to United’s next European fixture. It does not rule him out of Gameweek 10.

Villa’s defeat raises defensive and minutes questions

Aston Villa lost 3-0 away to Barcelona, with the opening goal stemming from a dangerous attempt to play out from the back. João Gomes gave the ball away to Lamine Yamal, and Barcelona punished the mistake. A deflection contributed to the second goal, while the third reflected the hosts’ quality, but Villa repeatedly invited pressure through their build-up. Ian Maatsen had a difficult evening against Yamal.

Villa’s defensive concerns extend beyond this result: they entered the match ranked 16th for Premier League expected goals conceded and had also given Fulham chances at the weekend. United’s attacking response against Roma should make Villa’s defensive record a relevant consideration for FPL managers, even though Barcelona pose a different level of threat.

There were attacking moments for Villa despite the loss. Matty Cash fired wide from a set piece, Gomes had a goalbound attempt blocked, and Leon Goretzka struck the post. Manzambi had Villa’s most promising open-play chances: he scuffed one effort wide after a pass from Nicolas Jackson, then forced a save from Joan García after creating room with his footwork.

Manzambi played in the number 10 role, where his chances suggested a clear goal threat. That position is notable because he has not occupied it in Villa’s previous two league matches. The drawback is playing time: he was withdrawn after 62 minutes, continuing a pattern of early substitutions. Five of Villa’s front six had been replaced by the 77th minute.

Manzambi’s underlying numbers and FPL returns remain encouraging, but fewer minutes give him less room to build on them. Jackson, meanwhile, had only one shot, which was blocked, though his pace on the break helped set up one of Manzambi’s chances. He also left the pitch after 77 minutes.

Villa have a Tuesday-to-Sunday turnaround before Gameweek 10, so the European defeat alone doesn’t point to widespread rotation among their leading players. Manager Unai Emery said the performance fell short of the level he wanted but gave him material to analyse as the team looks to compete better in the coming months.

The clearest FPL signals are specific: monitor Baleba’s hamstring assessment, watch whether Carrick keeps Cunha centrally, and weigh Manzambi’s attacking role against his limited minutes. United’s win provided attacking encouragement, but their defensive display leaves Villa’s forwards with opportunities to exploit.
